Program for Non-Native Speakers of English

Teach English in your native country! This 100 hour program is designed for students whose first language is not English but who are able to speak English at an advanced level. It is ideal for international students who would like to return to their home country and teach English in private schools or kindergartens.

Winfield has offered this full-time program since 1997. Based on the Communicative Theory of ESL training, the course covers a variety of teaching techniques and methodologies, including language skills and systems, and also communication skills.

Some of the Topics You'll Study:

Approaches & methods in language teaching

Teach speaking, listening, reading, writing

ESL lesson planning; groups & tutoring

Methods of presenting new language items

Teach vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation

ESP (children, business, TOEFL, TOEIC)

Classroom management techniques

The program consists of four main components:

1. Classroom instruction:

Classes are held Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Students who are absent for more than 20% of the classroom instruction component (10 hours) will be allowed to continue but may not receive certification.
Attendance is mandatory for your practice teaching sessions and ESL observations
Classes begin promptly at 9:00am. Trainees are expected to be on time.
Evaluation will be based on practice teaching sessions, assignments, peer teaching and participation.

2. Peer teaching:

Students will be required to teach EFL lessons and later give feedback after observing their peers teach.

3. Observation Classes:

Students will observe experienced teachers in Winfield College's EFL classes.
This will involve meeting with the teacher before the class and discussing the class direction and goals.
The students will then observe a 75 minute class.
A debriefing session will follow the observation class; trainees will be expected to give feedback.
This will be done at different times over the course of the program.

4. Authentic Practicum:

Classes in third and fourth week afternoons will be dedicated to practicum teaching from 1:00pm to 4:15pm.

You will be required to teach ESL classes to international students. Lesson plans will be reviewed with the supervisor prior to teaching.

A debriefing session will follow the practicum lessons; trainees will be expected to give peer feedback along with the supervisor.

Trainees should prepare themselves to work outside of class on take-home assignments and readings. In addition to readings and practicum lesson preparation and teaching, trainees can expect to complete numerous mini teaching assignments throughout the course.

Class size is limited so it is advisable to apply early.
