![]() Welcome to Winfield! My name is Jannel and I have been teaching here for over four years. After I finished my BA at the University of BC, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do right away. At the time, two of my aunts and my mother were all ESL teachers (Japan, Korea, Indonesia) so I decided to take a gap year and follow in their footsteps. I went to Komaki, Japan to teach, and the gap "year" ended up turning into an amazing three and a half years! When I was there, I had the great opportunity to teach ESL to students of all ages and levels. I loved being able to watch students' faces when they learned the alphabet, contributed to a discussion or used a new idiom for the first time. When I came back to Vancouver, I started working for Winfield College and completed my TEFL certificate here. Although I missed my students in Japan, I discovered how much fun it is to teach students of diverse backgrounds. In 2002, I had the opportunity to join the TEFL department as a teacher trainer. I have taught in both the TESOL diploma course for non-native speakers of English, as well as the certificate program for native speakers.
Winfield's teacher training courses have a great balance of theory and practice teaching. Students are not only prepared to plan a great variety of lessons, they are also given the opportunity to discover the "what ifs" of classroom situations by teaching their own ESL classes. My past students have gone on to do great things: managing ESL schools in their own countries, teaching ESL at the same schools they first had English classes, and training others to be teachers. I really enjoy being able to pass on my joys of teaching to others! |
