The expression "make a killing!" means to make a lot of money.
Look at the use of this idiom in the following dialogue. Two
friends, Jan and Martha, are talking about Jan's younger brother. Jan: I got a post card from my little brother, Tom, this morning. He's really enjoying his life in Tahiti. Can you imagine, he's only 23 years old and he's a millionaire! He'll never have to work again. Martha: He's a lucky guy. How did he make so much money? Jan: Well, do you remember the basketball web site he made two years ago? He had lots of information on the different teams and players in the NBA. Martha: Sure, I remember. It had games and contests and lots of other fun things. It was a really popular web site for basketball fans. Jan: Well, the NBA liked it so much they bought it from Tom for 3.5 million dollars. He made a killing! He's what you call a dot com millionaire because he made lots of money from the internet. Martha: Let's try to think of an idea for a web site so we can get rich too. I know if we work hard enough we'll think of something! |
